About Lynne Stone

My 2019 paintings are constructed but differently.  I start with a stretched linen canvas primed in an abstract pattern with transparent and tinted opaque gessoes. This means the building of the image actually starts with the application of the gesso itself.  The linen weave shows through the transparent gesso, creating visibility that invites a different response to the canvas surface.   I build the image by freely associating to the established picture plane.  The building blocks of the image are bits and pieces of stuff that are human, architectural and abstract.  I find elements that carry energy to be the most attractive.  I avoid the obvious when it comes to subject matter as well as preconceptions about how the work should look. Human elements include arm or hand gestures, faces whole or in part, body parts—observed in photos, magazines, or invented.  When a ‘thing’ comes together on the canvas, I feel an odd tickle in my synapses, a little electric current that tells me I’m onto something.  For my political and aesthetic philosophies I draw upon the works of DA DA and the paintings and drawings of R.B. Kitaj.
