Directed by Academy Award Nominee, Oren Jacoby, chronicling the life and career of Richard Hambleton, “Shadowman” will be screened at Green kill on Tuesday, July 17 at 7:30 PM. $10 at door or on Eventbrite.com. Ozubar offers light refreshments and snacks.
In the 1980s, Richard Hambleton was the Shadowman, a specter in the night who painted hundreds of startling silhouettes on the walls of lower Manhattan and, along with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, sparked the street art movement. After drug addiction and homelessness sent him spinning out of the art scene for 20 years, the Shadowman gets a second chance…but will he take it?
But unlike his contemporaries Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, who, as one of the film’s commentators waggishly puts it, each made the “good career move” of dying young, Hambleton, in his own words, “barely survived”.
The Hollywood Reporter says “The documentary, receiving its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, achieves its goal of shining a spotlight on its subject while delivering a fascinating true-life tale.”
The New York Times selected Shadowman as a “NY Critics Pick” – “This intense documentary shows a driven creator walking the walk, so to speak, in the most perverse fashion possible.”
