Sweetbryar, “Paris’33”,Acrylic on canvas, 30” x 40”

Sweetbryar, accomplished calligrapher, painter, sculptor, songwriter and rock-n-roller, has been part of every major development in American Bohemia since leaving home at the tender age of 15. She studied at The Brooklyn Museum Art School in the early sixties, attended The San Francisco Art Institute from 1966-68, graduated from The School of Visual Arts in 1980 and now – full circle – calligraphs the SVA diplomas each year.

In the 1980s, she opened Sweetbryar Calligraphics in NYC and has worked for such stellar clients:

Her work has appeared in Tim Burton’s Sleepy HollowPicture PerfectSex and The Cityand commercials for NBC NewsNabiscoand Burger King. She calligraphed all the lyrics and titles for The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ album, One Hot Minute, alongside the illustrations by Mark Ryden.

Most recently, she was honored to be featured in the recent book 100 New York Calligraphers by Cynthia Maria Dantzic ( Schaffer Publishing Ltd.)

In 2000, she relocated to Woodstock, NY to begin a life dedicated to painting and sculpture and collage. To date, she has been in over 25 group & solo shows in the Hudson Valley and the greater NYC area.

“I paint the mythic archetypes of life eternal. I draw upon the deepest shared memories of the human race – myths, legends & fairy tales to describe the indescribable. Often, I season my images with lettering, to summon the power of writing, all to illustrate the surrealistic nature of Time.
