About Mark Steven Brooks

Mark Steven Brooks was born 1955 in NYC and grew up in nearby Rockland County, NY. He received a B.M. in composition from the Manhattan School of Music in 1978 and M.A. in music in 1984 from Wesleyan University. He has composed over 100 works for a variety of media including western classical instruments, Indonesian gamelan and electronics and has received grants and awards from Meet the Composer, N.Y. State Council on the Arts, Mass. Council on the Arts, Charles Ives Foundation and others. His music has been heard throughout the U.S. as well as in Europe, Australia, Israel and Indonesia. In addition to composing, Brooks performs on electric bass, guitar, piano and percussion and has appeared at New Music America, BAM, Lincoln Center, The Knitting Factory and other new music venues. He has recorded for Folkways, Tzadik, XI, Gamelan Son of Lion, Strangemusic, Metasynthia, Elaterium, Unit Records, Musicworks and Sony record labels. Tonights concert will feature works for toy piano by Mark Steven Brooks, John Cage, Michael Jon Fink and Olivia Kieffer.

Álvaro Domene is a Madrid-born, New York based guitarist and composer operating at the convergence of various styles of contemporary creative music. His sound and compositions are influenced by the avant-garde jazz and modern classical traditions, as well as metal music. He has recently worked with Joe McPhee, Karl Berger, Elliott Sharp, Henry Kaiser, Briggan Krauss, Michaël Attias, Jim Black, Ben Goldberg, Michael Bisio, Colin Marston, Mike Pride, Ches Smith, Scott Amendola, and Fred Lonberg-Holm.
Álvaro’s latest and first solo record, “The Compass”, was a “Recommended New Release” on The New York City Jazz Record, and Avant Music News featured it on their “Best Albums of 2018” list.

About David Gonzalez

David Gonzalez is a Fellow of the Joseph Campbell Foudation, received the Lifetime Achievment award from International Performing Arts for Youth, and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for his original production of “The Frog Bride” at Broadway’s New Victory Theater.  He is a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department and was a featured performer at the National Storytelling Festival.  Mr. Gonzalez was the host of New York Kids on WNYC for eight seasons and his poetry has been featured at Lincoln Center’s Out-of-Doors Festival, Bill Moyers’ documentary Fooling with Words on PBS, and NPR’s All Things Considered.   Online at www.davidgonzalez.com
