About Kunkel & Kopchak
Guitarist/composer Jim Kunkel and bassist/composer Mickey Kopchak present lyrically and harmonically adventurous music crafted as vehicles for improvisation which spring to life in performance. They conspire together to honor the harmonic structure and form of the song while allowing the moment to guide the flow and conversation of improvisation.
The depth of their musical partnership (since 2015) is palpable in their live performance. They seek the balance of a unified sound rather than following the extant formula of soloist-and-accompanist. Kunkel switches between classical and electric guitars, enhancing the timbral soundscape, while Kopchak expands the sonic possibilities using various electronic effects, giving his bass a vocal and emotional quality that is always tasty and never “too much.”
Both are seasoned composers in jazz and other genres, affording them an extensive book of original material as well as the occasional interesting interpretation of others’ works. This approach to performance keeps things unpredictable and compelling for the listener as well as the performer.
Levanta means “lift” in Portuguese and Spanish, and this unique quartet brings a collective intention to do just that: lift the music and the spirits of the listeners. The origin of the group is literally from a dream which is fulfilled in a quartet comprised of Thomas Workman on flutes, fujara, ngoni, hulusi and didgeridoo; Timothy Hill on vocals and guitar; Gabriel Dresdale on cello; and Evry Mann on percussion. Unusual instruments in combination give Levanta a breadth, depth, and ability to morph through a wide range of textures, rhythms, and musical landscapes.
We rehearse on a weekly basis and have developed a deep rapport in our improvisations with a sense of perpetual frontier. New material, whether original or arrangement, goes through a collective process by which it becomes our own. From driving rhythms in odd meters, to the enchanting beauty of harmonic singing accompanied by cello and flute, to arrangements of music from Hermeto Pascoal, Dave Holland, and Abdullah Ibrahim, Levanta lifts with music that lives on in the listening.
