About John Hunter

Dassa Zoumé, Benin

John Hunder, “Dassa Zoumé, Benin.”

As a gay, black male elder, my paintings now focus exclusively on blackness in all of its figurative forms. My most recent body of work presents portraits of contemporary West Africans from Ghana and Benin based on photographs taken during my visit to these countries in 2018. These are representational and literal images of ordinary people who present themselves to the viewer with dignity, beauty, and confidence. Form, color, and brushwork are the principle means of creating these portraits in oil on canvas.
